Oral Cancer Screening
Anyone can be affected by oral cancer, whether they have their own teeth or not. There are over 4,300 new cases per year in the UK. A lot of cases are related to tobacco and alcohol consumption. Ethnic habits of chewing tobacco, betel quid, gutta el paan are particularly dangerous.
Over exposure to sunlight could lead to a risk of cancer of the lips.
Oral cancer can present many different ways and can affect any area of the oral cavity and lips. A common presentation is a painless mouth ulcer or a red or white patch, that does not resolve in two weeks. If detected early prognosis is much better. Your dentist examines the inside of your mouth and tongue when carrying out your examination and will be able to see if there are any abnormalities present. If anything abnormal is detected they will refer you to the local hospital where a consultant will see and treat you. A biopsy (sample of cells from the area) may be taken and then appropriate treatment given.
