Hygienist and Periodontal Disease

We use our mouth for many things - eating, drinking, speaking and also kissing, so it is very important we do everything to keep the mouth healthy, looking good and feeling fresh. Two most common diseases can be minimized by thorough oral cleaning. These are dental cavities or decay and periodontal or gum disease. They are both caused by plaque bacteria which is allowed to build up. This is what we are brushing away when we clean our teeth. It is when areas of plaque are left that problems begin.

Good oral hygiene does not stop at keeping the teeth clean. The v-shaped gum in between the teeth must be kept healthy with the use of the many aids on the market. The soft tissues must be clean and fresh to prevent infections. The tongue should be brushed with the use of a baby toothbrush or a specially designed one. Dentures should be scrubbed with a brush using denture cream or soap and water and left out at night.

Many of us have had dental treatment such as crowns, bridgework, orthodontic treatment or even implants. These all need special care and attention and often aids such as superfloss or mini interdental brushes are essential to get the best look and longevity from them. These can be expensive so a little time and effort is worthwhile. These aids are sometimes difficult to master so you will be shown how best to use them and a personal hygiene plan by your hygienist will be given.
